1000만 명. 농경사회를 가정할 때 대한민국 내에서 생존 가능한 최대 인구다. 7000만 명. 대한민국 영토 내에서 2차 산업에 의존할 때 자급자족할 수 있는 최소 인구다. 그러니까 4000만 인구가 영내에 거주하기 위해서는 무역이 필수 조건이 되는 것은 부정할 수 없는 사실이다. 때문에 이런 조건 하에서 자유무역 자체에 대한 합의를 늑약에 비유하는 것은 아이의 어리광과 유사하다. 기본적으로 시장의 기능을 존중하는 입장에서 자유무역은 이 나라의 인민을 풍요롭게 살아가게끔 만드는 방편임에 틀림없다고 생각한다. 다만 여기서 문제는 ‘자유무역협정’이 실제로는 전혀 자유롭지 않다는 데 있다.

의약분업 당시 파렴치한 의료인들에 대해 비분강개하던 것을 생각하면 격세지감이다. 얼마 남지 않았다. 졸업을 하고 면허를 따면 훌훌 털고 새로운 도전을 할 생각이다. 머물지 않아도 될 곳에 참 많이 머물렀구나, 하는 생각과 동시에 이곳에서의 생활이 없었다면 나는 어느 구석에 처박힌 룸펜이 되어 있었을까, 하는 생각을 하게 된다.

절반은 잘했고 절반은 잘못한 선택이라 생각한다. 지금의 경험을 토대로 다음 선택은 25%는 잘못했고 75%는 잘한 선택이 되리라 믿는다. 그 다음은 12.5%와.. 계산이 안된다. 뭐, 여튼 그렇게 자족에 수렴해가는 것이 나이를 먹으며 도전하는 삶을 사는 법이 아니겠는가.

지금은 멍청한 졸부 아들 이미지로 급락한 홍정욱의 <7막7장>의 한 대목이 생각난다. ’이제 갓 1막1장의 넘겼을 뿐’이라고. 중학교 때는 이 안면 두드러기 일어나는 말이 어찌나 멋있던지. 1막 1장은 애저녁에 넘긴 것 같고, 이제 2장 쯤 되려나.

끝이 보이는 사랑은 두 번 다시 하고 싶지 않다. 결혼할 때가 되었나. 그러기엔 너무 가진 게 없구나. 지난 구년 간 연애를 안 한 시간이 별로 없는 것 같은데. 이젠 좀 쉬고 싶다. 이번에는 잔잔히 사랑했다 싶었는데 한-참이 지나서야 후폭풍이 밀려온다. 이래서 헤어지면 사진 따위는 제깍제깍 없애야 하는 법. 이제는 도대체 몇 번 째인지 가늠도 안되는 데 여전히 버거운 걸 보면, 나도 어리석은 종자구나 싶다.

옥희는 진구와도 아차산에 갔다.

네 편의 단편으로 구성된 옴니버스 연작 <옥희의 영화>가 이야기하는 종결점에 같은 장소, 다른 시각, 같은 여자, 다른 남자로 구성된 ‘옥희의 영화’가 등장한다. 어떤 이는 이 영화에서 한국남자의 수직적 구조를 읽어낸다지만, 감정소모에 고군분투했던 한 해를 보낸 나는 ‘옥희’에 감정이입되어 아차산길을 걸어 올라간다. 송교수와의 기억을 반추하며 마치 처음이라는 듯 진구와 아차산을 올라가는 옥희의 행동은 내숭이라기 보다는 세월에 대한 적응이다. 적응은 때론 그처럼 연기를 통해서 이루어진다. 마치 다 잊었다는 듯 연기하는 것, 당신과의 행동이 처음이라는 듯 연기하는 것, 아무 일 없었다는 연기하는 것. 옥희는 진구와 함께 아차산을 하산하는 길에 송교수와 마주친다. 영화 속에서 지난할 정도로 사실주의적인 연출이 거듭되는 가운데 하나의 환상이 탄생한다. 송교수의 현현은 수많은 옥희들이 마주치는 수많은 송교수들이며, 이는 수많은 옥희들이 수많은 진구들 곁에서 반추하는 기억에 대한 알레고리다. 우리 옥희들은 진구들 곁에서 가끔씩 송교수들을 목격한다. 대부분, 못본 척하며 살아가지만 어느 순간, 마치 1월 1일 오후 1시의 송교수처럼 꼭 한 번 쯤은 현현하여 나타나는 기억과 마주치며 겁의 세월을 거스른 듯한 생생함 속에서 고통과 울분과 희열을 느끼게 된다. 그런 의미에서 <옥희의 영화>는 2010년 내가 있었던 자리들을 설명해주는 메타저널로 기능한다. 이 영화를 통해 홍상수란 이름에 평소 마뜩찮아 보내지 않던 경의를 담뿍 담아 보낸다.
